€6m will go towards flood defences which will begin in mid 2017.
The works will start ahead of the publication of the CFRAM flood risk plan and aim to take 250 homes in Athlone out of flood risk.
It’s also been announced that works to improve drainage will take place at Canal Walk and Griffith Street before the end of this year.
